20 years of care. Built for what’s next.
For 20 years, Amwell has partnered with health plans and healthcare organizations to advance connected, technology-enabled care. Our focus remains unchanged: improving access, delivering better outcomes, enhancing member experiences, driving adoption, and earning trust through solutions that help connect and simplify care.
Building modern healthcare, one milestone at a time
For 20 years, the way healthcare organizations use technology to expand access, engage consumers in their health journeys, and deliver care has continued to evolve. Amwell has helped support that transformation, from early telehealth and virtual visits to today's connected digital care experiences.
2006
Challenging the status quo
Amwell is founded on a belief that care shouldn’t depend on geography. Guided by a mission to connect providers, insurers, patients, and innovators, we begin building a more accessible, affordable, higher-quality, and connected healthcare system.
2008
Proving telehealth
Amwell launches its first telehealth platform, helping demonstrate that routine and urgent healthcare needs can be addressed virtually — conveniently and at scale.
We set out to reshape how care is delivered — and built for that future from day one.
— Ido Schoenberg, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Amwell
2009–2010
Pioneering a new model of care
At a time when virtual care was still largely unproven, Amwell partnered with forward-thinking health plans and health systems to demonstrate how telehealth could expand access, improve convenience, and become an integral part of healthcare delivery.
2012
Expanding access through virtual care
With the launch of Amwell Medical Group®, Amwell helps make virtual care available nationwide through care delivered by Amwell Medical Group providers, establishing capabilities that continue to support access and engagement today.
2013
Setting a new expectation for access
With the launch of the Amwell app, Amwell invests in a more convenient consumer experience under its own brand, helping pave the way for today’s connected care journeys.
2014
Expanding behavioral health access
Long before it becomes mainstream, Amwell broadens availability of behavioral healthcare with the addition of Amwell Therapy, laying the foundation for today’s whole-person care capabilities.
For 20 years, Amwell has worked to advance healthcare by bringing together innovative technology, clinical excellence, and operational excellence to make high-quality care more accessible, more connected, and more consistent.
— Cynthia Horner, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Amwell
2015
Reaching national scale
By supporting more than half of the nation’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield health plans, Amwell helps make virtual care accessible to millions more Americans while enabling plans to deliver branded digital experiences that strengthen member loyalty.
2016–2019
Bringing virtual care into the workflow
At a time when virtual care was widely treated as a separate service, Amwell builds integrations with Cerner (now Oracle Health) and Epic to embed virtual care directly into EHRs — reducing workflow friction and creating more connected experiences for clinicians and patients.
2018
Beyond the virtual visit
As healthcare organizations seek to extend virtual care across settings, the acquisition of Avizia expands Amwell’s capabilities beyond ambulatory care and into hospital-based workflows — an important step toward today’s technology-enabled care platform.
2020
Digital care’s defining moment
When COVID-19 disrupts healthcare worldwide, organizations turn to virtual care at unprecedented scale. Amwell helps health plans, health systems, and consumers stay connected — and becomes a public company to help fuel the next era of innovation and growth in digital care.
2021
Reimagining primary care & the platform shift
Through a Virtual Primary Care collaboration with a health plan, Amwell helps bring primary care into the digital experience, designed to support engagement and continuity of care. The same year, Amwell invests in an ecosystem approach, launches the Amwell Platform, and acquires SilverCloud® for digital behavioral health — helping customers reduce fragmentation and create more connected member experiences.
2022
Advancing whole-person care
Healthcare recognizes the need to better connect physical and behavioral health. SilverCloud’s selection by Ireland’s Health Service Executive (“HSE”) reinforces the growing role of digitally enabled whole-person care delivered through a more integrated experience.
2023
Powering care at enterprise scale
As part of a Leidos-led partnership, Amwell is selected to provide its platform (then Amwell Converge™) for the Military Health System’s Digital First program, extending connected care to service members and families worldwide. In 2025, Amwell and Leidos announced a healthcare first: a virtual specialty visit between a U.S.-based provider and a service member deployed overseas.
2024–2026
One experience, growing possibilities
Healthcare’s biggest challenges can’t be solved through fragmented point solutions. Amwell’s flexible, agnostic platform integrates 13+ Amwell-native and third-party programs as well as customer-selected solutions. This unification reduces vendor complexity, helps health plans bring new programs to market faster, and helps organizations focus more on optimizing care, improving member engagement, and proving value.
2026
Leading what’s next
With tens of millions of virtual care visits since inception and Frost & Sullivan’s 2026 United States Technology Innovation Leadership Recognition in the Technology-Enabled Care Platforms Industry, Amwell continues to build on its track record of shaping how digital care is delivered, connected, and experienced.
Care is increasingly delivered through connected, intelligent platforms — and that’s what we’ve built and continue to evolve.
— Dan Zamansky, Chief Product and Technology Officer, Amwell
