How Augusta University Health’s telemedicine program enables 24/7 COVID-19 and chronic care consults for rural hospitals

In 2019, Augusta University Health (AU Health), an academic medical center in Augusta, Georgia, partnered with Amwell to roll out a program to provide telemedicine emergency services at six rural hospitals in Georgia. By the summer of 2020, COVID-19 caused AU Health to shift this program to provide critical care consults to patients with the virus or other chronic conditions who could not be transferred to higher levels of care.

Read this case study to learn how AU Health leveraged its tele-critical care program to:

  • Significantly reduce transfer rates by more than 80%
  • Increase the number of patient ventilator days rural hospitals could support
  • Improve critical care in rural communities
  • Keep rural hospitals financially viable during the pandemic
